HIUNCHULI
Within the Annapurna Sanctuary there are three major peaks namely Tent
Peak, Fluted Peak and Hiunchuli. Jimmy Roberts, the man
recognized as the father of commercial trekking discovered
Hiunchuli and also gave the name Annapurna Sanctuary to the
region. The area is hallowed ground for the local inhabitants;
hence the name.
Hiunchuli is connected to the east face of Annapurna South and
is considered one of the most difficult among the trekking
peaks. The first to summit the peak was an American Peace Corps
Expedition led by Craig Anderson in Oct. 1971.
The
three peaks share a common route and the trek begins and ends in
Pokhara. Usually the trek starts the day you arrive in Pokhara
as the flight as well as the drive from Kathmandu is a short
one. The hike up to Sarankot is rewarding and the awesome
panoramic view of the mountains from this hilltop makes it all
worth the trouble. The region’s inhabitants are mostly Chhetri
people who are next to the Brahmins in the Hindu caste system.
The trek then leads up to Tanchok Potana and Naya Pul
(literally means ‘New Bridge”). Soon after you cross the
Modhi Khola (Khola = river) you get a grand view of the
Annapurna South and Hiunchuli your destination.
You next arrive at Chomrong, which has a river of the
same name. The trek then goes through a beautiful forest of
bamboo and rhododendron. All along the way, many lodges are
encountered and after crossing several streams the base camp of
Hiunchuli is finally reached on the sixth day.
