ISLAND PEAK OR IMJA
TSE
It
was the famous climber Eric Shipton who named the mountain
“Island Peak”. In 1953 Tenzing, Evans and Wylie, members of
the Everest Expedition also climbed the Peak as a side excursion
to reach peak fitness. It is surrounded by the giant peaks
Nuptse and Lhotse and lies in the Khumbu region. The peak is
connected to Lhotse Shar. The first part of the trek follows the
same path as the normal Everest Base Camp trek, but after Tsuro
Og the route diverges. The trail from here goes via Dingboche
and reaches Chhakhung. The normal practice is to set up Base
camp at Pareshaya. But here, one needs to be cautious since this
area is avalanche prone when there is heavy snowfall during
mid-winter. Going further up from Chhukhung you pass near the
southern bank of the Lhotse glacier and finally reach the Imja
glacier. The last part of the trek is through a lake- bed wedged
between the Lhotse and Imja glaciers. The view from the summit
of Island Peak is enchanting with views of such peaks as
Baruntse, the Amphu Peaks and Ama Dablam, considered one of the
most beautiful mountains. You can make it to the summit and back
the same day starting from Pareshaya Base Camp.
All it requires is fitness, proper acclimatization and
favourable weather conditions.
