LANGTANG TREK
Langang
is known for its superb mountain views and the numerous glacial
lakes with their crystal clear water, many of which are
considered sacred by Hindus.
This
trek starts from Dhunche, which is a 6 hr. drive by bus from
Kathmandu. The trek can take up to 14 days and there are
excellent facilities for food and accommodation along the route.
The route passes through beautiful alpine valley and the
Langtang region lies just south of the Tibetan border. The trek
takes you through Tamang villages, forests rich in wildlife and
over glaciers. This is prime habitat of the red panda and
Himalayan black bear. There is also an opportunity to see typical
Tibetan architecture that have flat roofed houses bound by stone
walls enclosing crop fields. You can make a trip to the cheese
factory built by the Swiss Association for Technical Assistance
(SATA) in 1955.
The
first day’s trek goes from Dhunche to Syabru crossing the
Trisuli river and enters the Langtang valley after crossing a
ridge at 2300m.The route passes a bamboo forest reaching Syabru
at 2100m. The next day the trek passes through
a forest that abounds in wildlife and crosses the
Langtang Khola (river) alongside which there are a series of
waterfalls and finally climbs to Lama Hotel.
On
the third day you encounter a steep climb above the Langtang
Khola after which you descend to the settlement of Langtang at
3500m. On the 4th day you climb past Tibetan
villages, lovely pastures and finally cross a moraine to reach
Kyanjin Gompa at 3800m. The next few days are spent in the
Langtang Valley. There are many choices here. You can return via
the same route or go for the alternative routes through either
Gosaikunda Lake or Ganja La (5,106m pass). The Gosaikunda is
revered by Hindus as a sacred lake and is an important
pilgrimage site. It is crowded during the full moon in August.
There are many lakes in this area. Through the Ganja La you
enter the Helambu area and follow the Helambu trek back to
Kathmandu. Many trekkers choose to return via the hilltop
settlement of Chisopani and wind off the trek at Nagarkot.
