PALDOR PEAK
This
trek gives one the opportunity to visit the famous Gosaikunda
lake, which is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus. A large
number of pilgrims visit here braving the freezing temperatures
and have the temerity to bathe in the frigid waters. The trail
also offers glorious views along the way.
Northwest
of Kathmandu lies the Ganesh Himal and at its foot is the Paldor
Peak (5,896m). Among all the treks this has the closest starting
point, which is only an hour’s drive away from the city
center. The actual trek begins from the little settlement of
Sundarijal, immediately below the Shivapuri hills. You will be
walking through picturesque landscape of grassland and forests
of oak, pine and rhododendron. Many trekkers doing the Langtang
trek also use this route hence there are people heading for
Langtang as well as Gosaikunda along this trail.
The
route to the sacred lake of Gosaikunda (4,600m) goes through
rich forest and farmland. On the way to Paldor peak it is
advisable to spend time here acclimatizing. Acclimatization is
best done by going for day hikes in the vicinity. There is more
reward than just fitness as the view is incredibly good with the
massive peaks Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang and Ganesh clearly in
sight.
After
Gosaikunda, the trail leads through craggy hills until you reach
the foot of Ganesh Himal. The
base camp, which is your next destination lies at 4,580m and is
below the Paldor glacier. Another day needs to be spent here
acclimatizing, as there is no point taking a risk. A person
suffering from altitude sickness has to immediately descend to
lower altitudes. The final high of the trip is the ascent itself
of Paldor peak. From the top the view is astounding, as you will
see different ranges of peaks from Mt Machhapuchhare in the
Annapurnas to the mighty peaks of the Khumbu. Shishapangma,
which is a mountain in Tibet is also clearly visible.
When
the climb is done the hard part is over and the trek back is an
easy hike all the way down to Trishuli Bazaar. On the way you
pass through Tiru Danda and Pansing Bhanjyang. From Bhanjyang
you will be driven back to Kathmandu arriving there five hours
later.
