PISANG PEAK
Pisang
Peak was first summited by J.Wellenkamp in 1955 when he made a
solo ascent as part of a German Expedition. The peak itself lies
in the Manang district. The route to Manang and Pisang Peak goes
up the valley of the Marshyangdi river. The trek takes you
through the lush green Marshyangdi valley but the landscape
slowly changes along the way. Higher up along the trail, the
terrain gets progressively dryer until you reach the arid rain
shadow area of Manang. Accordingly the life-style of the
inhabitants changes due to their adaptation to the climate and
conditions. This gradual change along the route makes this trek
highly interesting. Lower down near Pokhara you will find the
Gurungs and a little higher, the Thakali people. Still further
up, live the Manangay people who resemble the Tibetans in
features as well as religious practices.
You
can begin the trek to Pisang from Gorkha or Besisahar. These two
starting points are reached by bus from Kathmandu. The ride to
Gorkha is four hours and the settlement at Pisang is reached
after an 8-day trek. Here you will come across the Ongre
airstrip, a Climbing school and Himalayan Rescue Association Aid
Post. En route to Pisang you will pass through Bulbule, Synage,
tal and Chame(2,713m), which is the district headquarters of
Manang. It is possible for foreigners to undergo mountaineering
training conducted here by the Nepal Mountaineering Association
(NMA). You will pass through lovely pastureland and sparsely
wooded areas where the base camp can be set up. The popular
route to the summit is via the southwest ridge. Pisang Peak is
considered an easy climb with little difficulty encountered on
the way.
