RAMDUNG GO
Ramdung
Go (5,925m) lies in the north east of Nepal and the approach
route leads through Rolwaling, which is inhabited by the world
famous Sherpa people. They are known for their climbing prowess.
These communities being natives of the Himalayan regions are
remarkably adapted to high altitudes. The Ramdung Go trek is
popular for its stunningly beautiful alpine valley landscape.
A
drive down the Arniko highway from Kathmandu leads to Barabise
and the trek begins from the Barabise bazaar. The trail leads
through lovely alpine forest of mostly pine and rhododendron
trees. The rhododendrons are in bloom during spring. The walk
through little Nepali villages surrounded by farmland and
pastures is delightful. As you climb higher you encounter the
Sherpa people. Here the villages have spectacular backdrops like
Mt. Gaurishanker towering over the landscape.
The
last Sherpa village you will encounter in the Rolwaling region
is Beding. Ramdung Go is a remote peak but the only difficulty
you will encounter is the altitude. Technically not a difficult
climb, on this peak the most common problem is the rarefied air.
From the summit of the peak you will enjoy a fascinating view of
the highest mountain in the world, Mt.Everest besides the
Melungtse, Gaurishanker and a string of lofty Himalayan peaks.
Usually
after the ascent of a peak, the fun is over. Not so on this
trek. There is further adventure in store for you. There is a
high mountain pass to cross on the return journey. Tashi Laptsa
Pass (5,755m) takes at least two days to cross depending on
weather conditions. Then you will enter the true Sherpa country,
the Khumbu. Many mountaineering Sherpas hail from this region.
Mt.Everest and Lhotse also lie in the Khumbu region. After a
hike through the Thame village you arrive at the famous Namche
Bazaar, which today even boasts of a pool house. On your trek
back from Namche you will find yourself walking through
beautiful landscape. After a day’s walk you will reach Lukla
airport from where you catch a flight back to Kathmandu.
